ToggleHair transplantation is a surgical procedure performed to provide a permanent and natural solution for individuals experiencing hair loss or thinning problems. In the hair transplantation process, healthy hair follicles taken from areas of the person’s body that are resistant to hair loss are transplanted to bald or thinning areas. Hair transplantation helps individuals achieve a more aesthetic appearance. It also improves the quality of life for individuals whose self-confidence has been diminished due to hair loss. Thanks to the advanced technologies used today, hair transplantation methods have become highly sophisticated, making it possible to achieve successful results.
In a hair transplant procedure, the first step is to examine the individual’s level of hair loss. The method to be applied is determined on a case-by-case basis following these evaluations. The doctor carefully determines the patient’s hairline and the area where the transplantation will be performed. At this stage, the angles and directions of the channels to be created are meticulously determined to ensure a natural appearance of the hair. Hair follicles taken from the nape or behind the ears are called “grafts.” Grafts are removed either one by one using microsurgical techniques or as a strip of skin.
In the area where the hair follicles will be placed, micro-sized channels are opened. While opening these channels, the natural growth direction and angle of the hair are taken into account. The harvested hair follicles are carefully placed into the prepared channels. This stage constitutes the main part of the hair transplant procedure. After the operation, the patient is discharged and the healing process begins.
The hair transplant process usually takes between 4–8 hours. The duration of the procedure varies depending on many different factors and is personalized for each individual. Since local anesthesia is applied during the procedure, the person does not feel pain. In some cases, sedation may also be preferred.
Hair transplantation can be performed using different techniques, and the most suitable method is determined based on the patient’s needs and the area to be treated. The most common types of hair transplantation are:
In the FUT method, a strip of scalp is removed from the donor area, and the hair follicles are separated one by one and placed into the recipient area. However, since it leaves a scar, it is not commonly preferred today.
FUE involves extracting hair follicles one by one with the help of a micromotor and implanting them. The fact that it does not leave stitch marks and allows for faster recovery has made FUE a popular choice.
In this method, the channel-opening stage of FUE is performed using a special sapphire-tipped blade. Since more precise channels are opened for hair transplantation, the healing process is shorter and the results look more natural.
Performed with a device called the Choi pen, DHI eliminates the need for a separate channel-opening step during graft placement. The fact that hair can be transplanted without shaving also makes this method appealing.
This technique allows hair transplantation without shaving the existing hair. It is especially popular among individuals who want to quickly return to social life.
Each of these hair transplant methods has its own advantages and disadvantages. The choice of technique depends on the degree of hair loss, donor hair density, and individual preferences.
The use of blood-thinning medications such as aspirin should be stopped one week prior to the hair transplant operation. Caffeine, alcohol, and smoking should be discontinued a few days before the operation. If the person undergoing hair transplantation has a chronic illness, the doctor must be informed. On the day of the procedure, clean and comfortable clothing should be chosen. Styling products such as gel and hairspray should also be avoided. These steps are critical for a successful operation and a faster recovery.
To achieve successful results from a hair transplant, certain factors must be considered after the operation, just as before. In the first few days following the operation, scabbing and redness may appear in the transplanted area. The first wash is usually performed under medical supervision. From the third day onwards, washing with special shampoos recommended by the doctor can begin. During washing, the scalp should be massaged gently.
To protect the transplanted area from the sun and external factors, a soft and lightweight hat can be used. Additionally, the transplanted area should not be scratched and must be protected against impact. To prevent potential swelling, it is recommended to sleep on the back during the first 2–3 days.
In the first week after hair transplantation, heavy sports and activities that cause sweating should be avoided. The prescribed medications and vitamin supplements should be taken regularly. Strictly following the doctor’s instructions is essential for a quick and healthy recovery process.
About 2–3 weeks after the hair transplant, a process known as “shock loss” occurs in the transplanted hair strands. Even though the hairs fall out, the follicles remain intact. Within 3–6 months, new hair begins to grow. Initially, the new hair may appear thin and weak. Between 6 and 12 months, about 70–80% of the transplanted hair emerges. Within 12–18 months, the full results of the hair transplant become visible. The hair follicles thicken and achieve a natural appearance. However, since this process varies from person to person, it is important to remain patient.
Hair transplantation is suitable for both men and women and can be performed on anyone experiencing hair loss due to genetic or physical reasons. However, for a safe and effective hair transplantation process, an expert doctor must evaluate the patient and determine suitability.
